Sheriff’s report – December 2021

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Friday, Dec. 31: At 8:50 am a deputy assisted with cattle out in the 1500 block of County Road E-53 (235th St) west of Jefferson. At 11:17 am a deputy assisted a motorist who went into the ditch on the ice-covered roadway on Highway 30 at J Ave west of Jefferson. At 4:31 pm a deputy assisted a motorist who went into the ditch on the ice-covered roadway on Highway 4 near 330th St. At 4:46 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 200 block of 6th St in Grand Junction. At 9:56 pm a deputy, Churdan fire, Jefferson fire, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a single-vehicle rollover on P-14 (I Ave) near 160th St south of Churdan. Cody Erwin, 29, of Texas lost control of his 2009 Toyota Corolla on the ice-covered roadway and rolled in the east ditch. There were no injuries. Damage to the vehicle exceeded value. At 11:13 pm the sheriff and deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 4 near 310th St in Franklin Township. Melanie Smith, 21, of Des Moines lost control of a 2012 Jeep Liberty on the ice-covered roadway. There were no injuries. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $6,000.

Thursday, Dec. 30: At 2:07 pm a deputy arrested Megan Tingwald, 47, of Ankeny for a violation of probation*. At 2:15 pm the sheriff and deputies conducted a search warrant for stolen property at 1004 E. Railroad St in Grand Junction. Drug paraphernalia and suspected methamphetamines were seized. At 7:53 pm a deputy arrested Deividas Guinan 30 of Des Moines for a failure to appear arrest warrant*. At 10:50 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with the arrest.

Wednesday, Dec. 29: At 2:54 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident on County Road P-46 (W Ave) and 230th St east of Grand Junction. Christopher Cerwick, 58, of Fort Dodge was operating a 2020 Mack Semi pulling a load of hogs. The trailer tires fell into the ditch, pulling the entire truck and trailer over onto its side. Cerwick was not injured. Damage to the semi-tractor was estimated at $50,000. Damage to the trailer was estimated at $25,000. At 6:18 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment complaint in Dana. At 8:34 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1800 block of 195th Street in Hardin Township.

Tuesday, Dec. 28: At 12:06 pm a deputy investigated a report of a vehicle hitting a hawk on Highway 30 near T Ave east of Jefferson.  At 2:28 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1000 block of Eagle St in Scranton. At 3:09 pm a deputy investigated a report of a fire west of Rippey. The fire was a reported controlled burn.

Monday, Dec. 27: At 12:29 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a domestic assault in the 600 block of N. Cedar St. At 2:17 pm a deputy arrested Tyler Mattingly, 27, of Lake City for failure to appear on charges of robbery- first degree and theft- first degree*.

Sunday, Dec. 26: At 11:07 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident in the 300 block of Redwood Ave in Bristol Township. Eugene Sheehy, 68, of Grand Junction lost control on his 2004 Jeep Wrangler and rolled it. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $7,000. At 3:38 pm a deputy assisted with a complaint of harassment in the 1900 block of L Ave in Greenbrier Township.

Saturday, Dec. 25: At 1 pm a deputy assisted a jailer with an unruly inmate. At 3:08 pm a deputy arrested Joshua Solano, 27, of Perry on a warrant for a probation violation*. At 5:42 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of S. 17th St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Dec. 24: At 1:34 pm a deputy and the Jefferson fire department responded to a controlled burn that was out of control in the 2400 block of K Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 4:22 pm a deputy, Grand Junction fire, Jefferson fire, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a house fire in the 300 block of W. Main St in Grand Junction. The structure was severely damaged. The cause of the fire was determined to be the furnace. At 7:20 pm a deputy and the Jefferson fire department responded to a grass fire in the 1600 block of J Ave in Jackson Township.

Thursday, Dec. 23: At 7 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 30 at Granite Ave east of Scranton. Daniel Frederick, 47, of Bagley lost control of his 2003 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck on the slick roads. Frederick was not injured. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $4,500. At 10:37 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of N. 4th St in Grand Junction. At 4:07 pm a deputy investigated a littering complaint in the 2100 block of Orchard Ave in Franklin Township. At 7:04 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 800 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Wednesday, Dec. 22: At 8:39 am a deputy arrested Richard Sabus, 58, of Churdan for driving while barred and operating without an interlock device*. At 2:15 pm a deputy arrested David Tibben, 37, of Bondurant on a warrant for assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and theft- fourth degree*.

Tuesday, Dec. 21: At 3:44 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident at Highway 30 and County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. Krisaley Johnson, 16, of Perry was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt on P-14 (direction of travel not provided) when she failed to stop as posted at the intersection of Highway 30. Tyler Rohrbeck, 39, (no hometown given) was eastbound on Highway 30 driving a Ford 150 pickup truck (no model year given) when the vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Johnson was cited for failure to obey traffic control device. Damage to Johnson’s vehicle exceeded value. Damage to Rohrbeck’s vehicle was estimated at $15,000.

Monday, Dec. 20: At 6:03 pm Carlos Sierra Rojas, 25, of Des Moines was booked into the jail for an arrest warrant for operating while under the influence- second offense*. At 9:36 pm a deputy was called to the jail for combative subject. Carlos Sierra Rojas, 25, of Des Moines was being released from the jail and assaulted a deputy. Sierra Rojas was charged with assault on a person in a certain occupation*. He was then booked into the jail again.

Sunday, Dec. 19: At 1:21 am a deputy assisted with cattle out in the 800 block of County Road P-14 (I Ave) in Bristol Township. At 1:49 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 400 block of Harding St in Churdan. At 2:55 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle roll-over accident on Highway 4 and County Road P-29 (N Ave) in Highland Township. Jonathan Thede, 20, of Churdan lost control a 2004 Dodge Dakota. The Dakota was totaled in the accident. At 3:34 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 600 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 9:06 pm a deputy arrested Carly Hubby, 42, of Grand Junction for driving while license barred*.

Saturday, Dec. 18: At 2:30 pm the sheriff and deputies conducted search warrants at 862 I Ave in Bristol Township looking for suspected stolen grain. At 7:55 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 144 and 215th St north of Grand Junction. Theresa Lawson, 44, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $1,500.

Friday, Dec. 17: At 9:55 am a deputy and the Grand Junction fire department responded to ditch fire on County Road E-26 (170th St) and W Ave in Junction Township. At 12:15 pm the Jefferson fire department, a deputy, Jefferson PD, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a house fire in the 100 block of  County Road P-29 (N Ave) in Dawson Township. At 5:16 pm the sheriff and the Jefferson fire department responded to an electric pole fire in the 1600 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Jackson Township.

Thursday, Dec. 16: At 5:14 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on County Road E-53 and Parkland Ave east of Jefferson. At 3:44 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 500 block of 197th St in Kendrick Township. 9:12 pm a deputy and the Jefferson fire department responded to a power line and tree fire in the 1600 block of County Road E- 53 (235th St) west of Jefferson.

Wednesday, Dec. 15: At 5:28 pm all fire departments, the sheriff and deputies responded to storm damage. At 6:08 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of S 12th St in Grand Junction. At 6:51 pm the sheriff investigated a derailed train near 222nd St and Parkland Ave east of Jefferson. At 8:12 pm a deputy and Grand Junction fire responded to two employees stuck in an elevator at Louis Dreyfus LLC. At 8:25 pm all fire departments and the Greene County sheriff’s office investigated the smell of smoke across the county. At 8:57 pm the sheriff assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with locating a reported overturned trailer on Quail Ave near 340th St in Franklin Township. At 11:52 pm a deputy investigated a fight in the 200 block of N. Main St in Paton.

Tuesday, Dec. 14: At 11:35 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 600 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 12:34 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 2200 block of County Road E-26 (170th St) in Junction Township.

Monday, Dec. 13: No activity reported.

Sunday, Dec. 12: At 8:22 am a deputy assisted with a cow out in the 1000 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Bristol Township. At 8:34 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Dec. 11: At 8:28 am a deputy, Jefferson fire department, and Greene County Ambulance responded to an outbuilding fire in the 1400 block of 190th St in Hardin Township. The building had major damage from the fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical issue. At 8:35 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 800 block of Q Ave in Hardin Township. At 11:26 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 500 block of Wise St in Paton.

Friday, Dec. 10: At 11:43 am a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on I Ave near 270th St in Jackson Township. Kaleb Hoyle, 18, of Grand Junction was westbound on 270th St driving a 2012 Ford F150 pickup truck. Stephen Hupp, 65, of Scranton was northbound on I Ave driving a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. Hupp failed to yield the right of way and struck Hoyle’s vehicle. There were no injuries. Hupp was cited for failure to yield the right of way. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident.

Thursday, Dec. 9: At 3:44 am a deputy investigated a fire in the 1200 block of 110th St in Highland Township. At 4:37 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 30 near Hillcrest Ave west of Jefferson. Douglas Dusheck, 58, of Coon Rapids lost control of his 1997 Chevrolet K1500 on the ice-covered roadway and rolled in the ditch. The driver was transported the Greene County Medical Center by Greene County Ambulance. The vehicle was a total loss. At 5:23 am the sheriff and deputies, Jefferson fire department, Scranton fire department, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a two-vehicle head-on collision on Highway 30 near Hillcrest Ave. Samuel Carlson, 38, of Jefferson was westbound driving his 2012 Chevrolet K2500 pickup truck. Leonard Feilmeier, 54, of Glidden was eastbound driving a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu. Carlson lost control of his vehicle and the two vehicles collided in the middle of the Raccoon River bridge. Carlson sustained minor injuries and was transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County Ambulance. Both vehicles were a total loss. At 5:41 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near Eaton Ave east of Scranton. The vehicle was undamaged. At 6:24 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 30 at Granite Ave east of Scranton. William Hines, 51, of Rippey lost control of a 2009 Chevrolet K1500 pickup truck on the ice-covered road and entered the ditch. The vehicle sustained minor damage. At 8:49 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment at 170th Street and W Ave in Junction Township. At 6:18 pm a deputy investigated a mail scam in the 1400 block of Kirkwood Ave in Jackson Township.

Wednesday, Dec. 8: At 8:54 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1100 block of Y Ave in Junction Township.

Tuesday, Dec. 7: At 8:27 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 4:35 pm a deputy assisted the Carroll police department with trying to locate stolen property in the 900 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 8:35 pm a deputy arrested a subject at Wild Rose Casino on Boone County warrants for controlled substance violations. At 11:50 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 1400 block of Highway 144 at Grand Junction.

Monday, Dec. 6: At 3:28 pm a deputy investigated a fire that was found to be from a reported controlled burn on 340th St near Brentwood Ave in Willow Township. At 4:01 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 700 block of E. Railroad St in Grand Junction.

Sunday, Dec. 5: At 3:02 am a deputy, Jefferson fire department, and Grand Junction fire department responded to a garage fire in the 900 block of Parkland Ave in Hardin Township. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Saturday, Dec. 4: At 7:01 am a deputy investigated several street signs and stop signs that were shot several times overnight in the vicinity of 150th Street and A Ave to 180th Street and C Ave in Kendrick Township. At 7:22 am a deputy assisted with cattle out on County Road P-33 (S Ave) near 195th St in Hardin Township. At 3:55 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of burning in the 700 block of Walnut St in Scranton. At 4:29 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Dana.

Friday, Dec. 3: At 10:13 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 400 block of S. Main St in Paton. At 12:54 pm a deputy arrested Scott Picknell, 23, for possession of a controlled substance*.

Thursday, Dec. 2: At 12:35 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 400 block of S. 9th St in Grand Junction. At 3:42 pm a deputy and the Paton fire department responded to a gas leak in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton. At 4:19 pm a deputy, Jefferson fire department, and Scranton fire department responded to a vehicle fire in the 600 block of 300th St in Willow Township. A 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix and a 2008 travel trailer were both a total loss in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. At 6:59 pm the sheriff’s office and the Jefferson PD conducted a search warrant at 609 W. Adams St in Jefferson. Suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia were seized. Charges are pending lab results.

Wednesday, Dec. 1: At 3:08 pm a deputy assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with a pursuit on V Ave near 305th St in Franklin Township, Greene County. The pursuit started in Dawson. Curtis Moorhead, 44, of Jamaica was taken into custody. At 6:03 pm Grand Junction fire and fescue, Greene County Ambulance, Jefferson fire, and deputies responded to a two-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 30 near 16th St in Grand Junction. Jerry Petersen, 71, of Boxholm was traveling eastbound on Highway 30 driving a 2013 Ford Edge. He attempted to pass a semi tractor-trailer and struck a westbound 2013 Jeep Wrangler head-on. The Wrangler was driven by a licensed juvenile who had three family members as passengers. The Jeep entered the north ditch. Petersen’s vehicle rolled several times into the south ditch. Petersen was transported by ambulance; he was wearing a seatbelt and the airbags deployed in the accident. The occupants of the Jeep were wearing seatbelts; they were uninjured. Damage to both vehicles exceeded value. Petersen was cited for unsafe passing.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
